Always-on Home Defense AR15 Optics

This article contains a list of all rifle scopes, prism optics, reflex red dot sights, and holographic sights with Always-On illumination capabilities suitable for your home defense AR15 or other long gun. Always-On means that when you grab your rifle in the middle of the night, the optic’s illumination will be on and ready without you fumbling to press buttons in the dark. While this list is heavy on the reflex red dot sights (due to their extreme battery life), there are also prism scopes and low power variable optics on the list (typically with motion sensors). Always-on-capable designation for home defense optics

In a home defense scenario, you may not have time to turn on an optic: the optic needs to be automatically or already on when you grab your long gun. My criteria for the Always-on-capable designation are:

Battery-free illumination: Some reflex sights and prism scopes use fiber optic and tritium illumination sources, such as the Meprolight Mepro M21, and various Trijicon ACOG prism scopes, or
No auto-off (or an auto-off feature that can be turned off) and battery life of at least 1 year: many reflex sights have a battery life measured in years. As long as the optic does not have an auto-off timer, the optic can be turned on and left on for home defense purposes. The Aimpoint PRO is a classic example of an optic with multi-year battery life that you can just leave turned on, and therefore is always ready to go, or
Motion-on sensor (“Shake Awake”).

Motion-on (“Shake Awake”) illumination

Shake-awake technology uses a motion sensor to detect movement and switch on the optic’s illumination. Shake-awake is usually paired with an “auto-off” feature (using either a timer or tilt sensor) to extend battery life. Technically, “Shake-awake” is a trademark of Holosun, which uses motion sensors on a number of different reflex red dot sights, but here we’re using it generically to refer to optics that use motion sensors to automatically switch on illumination.

Tilt-off vs. Motion-on (shake-awake)

Tilt-off optics automatically switch off illumination (to save battery power) using a tilt sensor that detects the orientation of the optic relative to the vector of gravity (plumb). When you position the rifle in a shooting orientation, the tilt sensor switches on the illuminaiton. For home defense, tactical or competition applications where you may need to shoot while laying the rifle on its side, select an optic with a motion sensor. A tilt sensor will switch off your illumination if you try to use it laying on its side. For hunting applications where you may need to hike into your hunting area, a tilt sensor will extend battery life by switching off the illumination while the rifle is slung. A motion sensor will burn up your battery while you are hiking.

Motion-on (shake-awake) optics automatically switch on illumination using a motion sensor that detects motion or vibration. For example, Leupold’s Motion Sensor Technology (MST) turns off illumination after five minutes of inactivity, but when any motion or vibration is detected, it instantly switches on illumination at the previous brightness setting. Sig Sauer’s MOTAC and Holosun’s Shake Awake technologies work the same way. Motion-on optics are preferred over tilt-off optics for home defense, tactical, or competition scenarios where you may need to shoot with the gun laying on its side.

Motion-on optics have short auto-off timers (minutes) that switch off the illumination when inactive to extend battery life, but the motion sensor remains active and able to switch the illumination back on, no matter how much time has passed. In contrast, tilt-off optics have long auto-off timers (hours) that completely switch off the optic – after the auto-off timer switches off the optic, you must manually switch on the illumination.

Because tilt-off optics require you to manually switch on the optic after the auto-timer has expired, tilt-off optics are not included in the list below.

Open vs. closed (tube) sights

Open sights, like the Holosun 510c, Meprolight Meopro RDS, or Sig Sauer Romeo3 XL 1×35, have a single plane of glass and exposed LED emitter. Open sights typically provide larger viewing windows and may be easier to initially pick up the reticle or red dot. Because they are a single pane of glass, they more easily blend into the natural human field of view. The downside of an open sight is the opportunity for dirt, mud, or debris to cover the LED emitter, effectively turning your optic off.

Closed sights are fully enclosed, typically in a tube form factor. Closed sights tend to be more rugged and impervious to weather and mud/debris. The downside of a closed sight the tunnel effect on field of view, and the smaller average window size may make the dot harder to pick up initially.

Larger closed sights with 23mm or larger clear apertures, like the Aimpoint CompM4 1×23, Trijicon MRO 1×25, or Sig Sauer Romeo8 1×38, may provide the best of both worlds. Some closed sights used AA batteries, however under repeated recoil, the mass of the AA batteries tend to wear out the contacts, buyer beware.

Note: frustratingly, some brands, like Holosun and Leupold, do not report the clear aperture/window size of some of their red dot sights anywhere on their web sites.

Astigmatism and reflex sights

For shooters with astigmatism, reflex red dot sights may exhibit blooming, halos, or other aberrations. Prismatic sights, holographic sights, or low power variable optics may mitigate these effects relative to a reflex red dot sight.

The myth of parallax-free red dots

Many brands advertise their reflex red dot sights as “parallax-free”. But the reality is all red dot sights have some degree of parallax error. Parallax error shifts the point of impact away from the point of aim due to a difference between the dot’s focal plane distance and the target’s actual distance. You can eliminate parallax error by placing the dot in the center of the viewing window. The farther the dot is toward the edges of the viewing window, the greater the potential parallax error.

All optics have a parallax-free distance: where the perceived distance of the dot’s focal plane matches the distance to the target. The parallax distance for most red dots are set to infinity: the dot’s focal plane distance will always exceed the actual range to the target. For distant targets, the parallax error will be vanishingly small, but for close range targets, the parallax error can become significant. Some brands set the dot’s focal plane distance at 100 or 50 yards to minimize the parallax error at closer ranges, where the majority of “meaningful” dot shooting occurs. For home defense purposes, the closer the dot’s focal plane, the better.

On the rare occasion when a brand provides the parallax distance for their optic, it is shown in the Features section in the list below (e.g., Fixed focus @ 50 yards).

The optics list below only includes optics full-size optics typically mounted on an AR15. Micro reflex sights for handguns, while possible to mount on an AR15, are excluded. See my full article for micro red dots for handguns.

I also exclude variable power rifle scopes with a minimum magnification of 2X or more. 1X magnification (or 1.nX magnification) is preferred in a home defense situation to achieve maximum field of view and the greatest ability to shoot with both eyes open.
