Because unmagnified reflex and holographic sights have unlimited eye relief and natural human-vision field of view, they are the best optics choice for short-range, both-eyes-open shooting scenarios, such as 3-gun and home defense. Flip-up magnifiers are a popular way to increase the mid-range and long-range capabilities of a rifle equipped with unmagnified reflex or holographic sights, without sacrificing the short-range performance of an unmagnified, unlimited eye relief optic.
Flip-up magnifiers are always mounted behind the reflex or holographic sight because magnified optics always have limited eye relief. In addition to flip-up magnifiers, there are a handful of screw-on magnifiers designed to attach directly to tube-style reflex sights.
Reflex sights use collimated LED light to display a red dot or more complex reticle (e.g., circle-dot or horseshoe-dot). Holographic sights use laser-illumination to display a more complex reticle. The central aiming dot of reflex sights is limited to 2-MOA or larger. Holographic sights feature 1-MOA central aiming dots.
Magnifiers will magnify the reflex red dot or reflex reticle just as you would expect. If the red dot is 4-MOA without magnification, it will remain 4-MOA with magnification, even though the dot will appear larger through the magnifier (but so does the target image). Because of the way holographic sights work, the center aiming dot of a holographic sight will not appear magnified, although the rest of the reticle will be magnified as expected. The reason for this is that the central aiming dot of holographic sights are actually much smaller than 1-MOA, but 1-MOA is about the limit of the resolution of our eyes for illuminated dots. Because the magnified holographic aiming dot is still below 1-MOA, we do not perceive a change in dot size. When you flip-up the magnifier, the holographic central aiming dot won’t appear to change size even though the target image has increased size.
