Desired features for rimfire varmint scopes

Don’t ask What’s the right scope for my rifle? Rather, ask What’s the right scope for the shots I’m taking? Here, I’m examining rimfire ammunition fired at varmints between 10 yards and 300 yards. The maximum effective hunting range is 200 yards for .22LR, 300 yards for .17HMR. Both rounds obviously go farther, but you’re probably going to miss the varmint. The reality is the vast majority of rimfire shots are inside 200 yards in full daylight. If you’re going to use what snobs call cheap glass, this is the application for it.

Magnification

Magnification assists with target identification, precision of aim, and the ease of reading the adjustment from the puff of dirt when you miss. But, higher magnification fatigues your vision, weighs more, and strains your wallet.

For rimfire varmint hunting, I like 1X for every 10 yards of range as a rough rule of thumb. When I’m varmint hunting with .22LR, I figure 80% of my shots are inside 50 yards. 10% out to 100 yards, and 10% fooling around for fun at the extreme ranges of .22LR. What does this mean for common magnification choices?

• Fixed 6X would be a little weak on less than 20% of the shots (60 yards on out). For the savings and simplicity, I rate it a reasonable choice.
• 3-9X would be a little weak on only 11% of the shots (90 yards on out). Solid pick.
• Fixed 10X is perhaps a bit high when looking for close-in targets, but a solid pick.
• 4-14X gives us 1X per 10 yards all the way out to 140 yards, the frontier of where you can consistently hit small varmints. Sweet spot.
• 6-24X is a ton of scope on a rimfire rifle. The 24X can be useful for taking closer looks at things. Is that a dirt clod or a critter way out there? You’re only giving up 2X on the low end for to gain 10X on the high end. Not unreasonable.

Your mix of ranges shot might be different, but you can plug in your particular assumptions to understand your magnification needs.

First focal plane (FFP) vs second focal plane (SFP) vs fixed

FFP reticles get bigger or smaller when you change magnification, and SFP reticles remain the same size. On a SFP scope, reticle subtensions are only “as advertised” when the scope is at maximum magnification. Many SFP rifle scopes are simple duplex crosshairs with no subtension markings.

You can get the job done with a SFP scope, but for speed purposes, I like to adjust drop using the reticle. That means you’ll mainly be using your SFP scope on max magnification (or maybe half-max with a little extra math). For hunting varmints, I prefer FFP or fixed magnfification scopes.

Reticles

When varmint hunting, you may not have time to dial the range adjustment into your elevation turret. Look for reticles with subtension markings (e.g., MIL/MRAD, MOA or BDC) to facilitate holdovers for longer ranges. MRAD (milliradians) and MOA (minute of angle) are both angular measures, like yards and meters both measure distance. They are both fine, and it really doesn’t matter much which one you choose.

MRAD and MOA reticles have evenly spaced marks, dots or trees. Keep a notecard of adjustments for varying ranges and winds for your favorite ammo. Bullet drop compensator (BDC) have holdover marks for ranges like 50, 100, 150, and 200 yards. As you might imagine, BDC reticles are specific to a particular bullet going a particular speed. They’re always a bit off. That said, you can test your favorite ammo and figure out what ranges the markings actually represent and write that on the notecard.

Focus/parallax adjustment

Parallax error occurs when the reticle and objective image aren’t focused to the same focal plane. You can spot parallax when you hold the scope perfectly on target, then move the position of your eye around inside the eye box. Do the cross hairs move relative to the target? If yes, then you need to adjust for parallax. There’s two parts to this equation:

• Reticle focus
• Objective image focus

Reticle focus is set by turning the eye piece ring. Ideal reticle focus may vary by shooter. This YouTube video explains the process.

The objective image focus must be adjusted for the range to target. Is you target blurry or in focus? There are four types of scopes:

• fixed focus (no focus adjustment)
• adjustable objective (front ring on objective bell)
• side focus (left-side turret)
• rear focus (rear ring forward of eye-piece ring for reticle focus)

Lower power scopes are typically fixed focus with deep depth of field centered somewhere between 50 and 150 yards. Higher power scopes have less depth of field and need adjustable focus. The focus ring or turret is usually marked with calibrated ranges (a handy way to quickly guesstimate or double check a range). Rear focus is typically only found on fixed power scopes. Many shooters find side focus the most ergonomically convenient to adjust.

If you pick a high-power scope for your rimfire rifle, look for a scope that can focus down to 20 yards or less. All the scopes listed below with adjustable parallax can focus down to 25 yards or less.

Best rifle scopes under $500 for rimfire varmint hunting (2019)

The following scopes meet these criteria:

• street price under $500
• fixed parallax distance under 100 yards, or
• adjustable parallax distance down to 25 yards or less
• minimum magnification between 2X and 6X
• OR the brand’s scope or reticle description says “rimfire”
