Leupold rifle scopes are famous for their optical clarity and ruggedness, and are popular with hunters, military, law enforcement, and competitors in many disciplines. This buyer’s guide covers all first focal plane (FFP) Leupold rifle scopes. Updated: May 12, 2021, 17 optics, 77 reticles.
The following Leupold scope lines have first focal plane models:
- VX-3i LRP (FFP models)
- Mark 5HD
- Mark 6
- Mark 8
Most Leupold rifle scopes are second or rear focal plane (SFP or RFP), such as the VX-3i, VX-5HD, VX-6HD and Mark AR lines of scopes. The integer in the model name (e.g., Mark “6”) indicates the zoom range of the internal erector tube system. Higher zoom ranges provide greater flexibility, but are more expensive. Higher zoom ranges require greater precision in assembly and lens prescription, because the size of the image changes more within the erector tube (in a Mark 6, the rear image may be up to 6X smaller than the image at the erector’s front focal plane). The VX-3i LRP models come in both first focal plane or second focal plane models. VX-3i LRP scopes have 30mm main tubes, the FFP Mark series have 34mm or 35mm main tubes.

About Leupold turrets
All Leupold FFP scopes have an exposed elevation turret with a zero stop feature. Most have a capped windage turret, but the Mark 8 scopes and the Mark 6 1-6×20 LPVO have exposed windage turrets. I personally prefer capped windage turrets, because I always hold for wind in the reticle.
The “C” turret systems (M6C1, M5C2, M5C3, and M1C3) feature a ZeroLock feature that automatically locks the turret when dialed to zero – depress the wide button on the turret to dial away from zero. There is no mechanism to lock at the turret at a setting other than at zero. The older “B” turret systems (M5B2 and M5B1) have an Auto-Locking Pinch and Turn Adjustment feature that automatically locks the turret wherever you have dialed it – pinch both sides of the the turret knurling to dial to a new setting.
The Leupold Custom Shop can swap out M5-style turrets with other M5-turrets. If you want M5C3 instead of M5C2 on your Mark 6 3-18×44, you can do that.
About the Leupold dial naming convention:
- “M5” indicates 0.1 MRAD clicks, “M1” indicates 0.25 MOA clicks.
- “B” and “C” indicate the dial style. Older style “B” dials have 10 MRAD per turn, pinch-to-turn locking, and quick-change BDC elevation rings. Newer style “C” dials have 11 MRAD per turn, ZeroLock, and do not have quick-change BDC rings.
- The number following the “B” or “C” indicates the number of turns the elevation dial supports. For example, “M5C3” is a three-turn dial.
Leupold M5B1 dials
Standard on Mark 8 1.1-8×24 CQBSS.
The M5B1 has an exposed single-turn dial with 0.1 MRAD clicks, 10 MRAD per turn, zero stop, a pinch-to-turn locking feature. Leupold is phasing out the M5B1 in favor of their newer M6C1 turret. The Mark 8 1.1-8×24 has an exposed windage turret with pinch-to-turn locking.
Leupold M6C1 dials
Standard on the Mark 6 1-6×20.
The M6C1 is a low-profile exposed single-turn dial with 0.2 MRAD clicks, 11 MRAD per turn/total, zero stop, and a lock-at-zero feature. Because it is a single-turn dial, there is no need for a revolution indicator. The lower set of numbers on the dial are MRAD, the upper set of numbers are BDC yardages for M855 5.56mm NATO ammunition with a 100 yard zero.
Leupold M5B2 dials
Available on Mark 6 3-18×44 M5B2 and Mark 8 3.5-25×56 M5B2.
The M5B2 has an exposed two-turn elevation dial with 0.1 MRAD clicks, 10 MRAD per turn, zero stop, a pinch-to-turn locking feature, and a visual+tactile revolution indicator pin on the top of the dial. You can quickly replace the elevation dial number ring mawith a custom BDC ring by simply pressing two pins. The Mark 6 3-18×44 M5B2 model has a capped windage turret. The Mark 8 3.5-25×56 M5B2 model has an exposed windage turret with pinch-to-turn locking.
Leupold M5C2 dials
Available on the Mark 6 3-18×44 M5C2 and the Mark 8 3.5-25×56 M5C2.
The M5C2 has an exposed two-turn dial with 0.1 MRAD clicks, 11 MRAD per turn, zero stop, a lock-at-zero feature, and a visual+tactile revolution indicator pin on the top of the dial. The Mark 6 3-18×44 M5C2 model has a capped windage turret. The The Mark 8 3.5-25×56 M5B2 model has an exposed windage turret with a lock-at-zero feature.
Leupold M5C3 dials
Standard on all Mark 5HD MIL models.
The M5C3 has an exposed three-turn dial with 0.1 MRAD, 11 MRAD, zero stop, and a lock-at-zero feature. The revolution indicator recesses the ZeroLock button in the second revolution, and raises the indicator pin on the top of the dial in the third revolution. All Mark 5HD MIL models have capped windage turrets.
Leupold M1C3 dials
Standard on all Mark 5HD MOA models.
The M1C3 has an exposed three-turn dial with 0.25 MOA clicks, 26 MOA per turn, zero stop, and a lock-at-zero feature. The revolution indicator recesses the ZeroLock button in the second revolution, and raises the indicator pin on the top of the dial in the third revolution. All Mark 5HD MOA models have capped windage turrets.
Leupold VX3i LRP dials
Standard on all VX3i LRP models.
The VX3i LRP has an exposed elevation turret, with 0.1 MRAD or 0.25 MOA clicks, zero stop, and a visual revolution indicator. LRP turrets do not have a locking feature. As you dial up, numbers are revealed on a descending sleeve with each revolution. You add the number on the dial to the number on the sleeve to get the total adjustment dialed. For example, on a VX3i LRP MOA elevation turret, there are 15 MOA per revolution, so the sleeve is marked with 15, 30, 45, and 60. The MOA turret may be dialed a maximum of 75 MOA of elevation from zero (five revolutions). The MRAD turret has 5 MRAD per revolution, with same dialing limit of 75 MOA (21.8 MRAD).
Leupold FFP reticle diagrams
Leupold has an excellent selection of reticles suitable for long range precision shooting, and if you want a reticle that isn’t standard in the scope model you are considering, the Leupold Custom Shop may be able to make it happen. The fantastic selection of standard reticles and the Custom Shop are two big reasons why Leupold optics are so popular.
Picking a reticle is a matter of personal preference. Some folks like simple mil-dots or Leupold TMR, others prefer complex Horus tree reticles. Some folks prefer MOA, others milliradians (aka MIL or MRAD). That said, I generally recommend that long range shooters avoid bullet drop compensation reticles (BDC), as they are approximations at best, and make it difficult to apply dope from ballistic calculators. I personally like tree-style reticles with relatively simple designs such as the Leupold Impact-60 MOA reticle. To get the most out of a Horus reticle (H-59, Tremor2 and Tremor3), you’ll need to commit to memorizing attributes about the reticle layout. But if you’re willing to learn a complex tree reticle, they can help you quickly transition to new targets, range them, and adjust for drop and wind without touching the turrets.
