This is a list of popular one-piece 34mm rifle scope mounts, sometimes called monolithic rifle scope mounts or unibody rifle scope mounts.
About scope mounts
There are two basic categories of monolithic mounts: standard or cantilever. On an AR15, cantilever offset mounts are required to move the scope forward to establish correct eye relief while maintaining the mount attachment entirely on the upper receiver’s rail. Standard rifle scope mounts without cantilever offset are appropriate for bolt action rifles and larger semi-automatic rifles such as the AR10 or SCAR 17.
Mount height refers to the distance from the top of the rail to the centerline of the optic. On most bolt action rifles, use the lowest height that still allows clearance for the objective bell (and lens cap), typically 0.9 inches to 1.3 inches. Mounting heights are typically higher on semi-automatic rifles due to the ergonomics of the cheek weld implicit in their design. Iron sight height over rail for common semi-automatic rifles:
- AR15/M16/M4 iron sights = 1.41 inches
- HK416/MR223/MR308 IAR diopter sights = 1.27 inches
- FN SCAR 16/17 = 1.45 inches
Many semi-automatic rifle users prefer optics mounted slightly higher than iron sight height, with about 1.5 inches being the most popular. A sight height of 1.9 inches is preferred For users with PEQ/DBAL devices mounted on the top of the front rail of an AR15.
Other features to consider when evaluating rifle scope mounts include:
- Rail clamping: QD (quick detach) use levers to remove or re-attach a mount without tools. Static mounts use 1/2 inch nuts or Torx-head bolts requiring tools, and ideally a torque wrench, for attachment.
- Cant: flat or no-cant (0 MOA) mounts are the default, but long range shooters prefer mounts with built-in cant, most commonly 20-MOA.
- Material: 6061-T6 aluminum is most common, but the more expensive 7075-T6 aluminum is harder and less likely to strip out bolt holes.
- Integrated bubble level: some of the high-end mounts include an integrated bubble level in the rear ring.
- Accessory attachment points: many of the mounts offer attachment points for accessories such as a reflex red dot sight.
